Watched Hail Caesar because with that cast, how could it go wrong. Sadly, the answer appears to have been, “quite easily”. I had to be generous and raise the rating up to 1 Icee (out of 5). This is the worst movie I’ve seen in years. Why raise it up to a 1? Simply because the A-list actors (Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Josh Brolin, Ralph Fiennes and others) did they best they could with a droll script. The period parts of it were spot-on, and that’s about all the good I can say. I’m not sure what this movie was trying to be. If it was trying to be a comedy, it was horrible. If it was trying to be a drama, it was even worse. If it was a satire piece, it only had a modicum of success. It was bad. In fact, the couple sitting next to us walked out on it. Our biggest mistake was not joining them. I am glad we saw it as a matinee because if we had paid full price, I would have had to call the police and charged them with robbery. My advice? Wait until this comes out on Redbox and then laugh at anyone that rents it, knowing they’ve wasted a buck. There’s no scene after the credits, and no good scenes during the movie (unless you count the tap-dancing scene; it was okay).
