Angry Birds Movie, The

I was so looking forward to this movie, and then after watching it I realized that the only thing angry was me. Okay, that might be a slight exaggeration, but not by much.  I can only give this movie 2 Icees (out of 5). With the exception of the last fight scene, it really just wasn’t that funny overall. Yeah, it had a brief moment here and there that was funny and the kids in the theater laughed, but overall it just lacked humor. There was so much more that they could have done with this movie, but just didn’t.  Or maybe I’m wrong and there just really wasn’t much they could think of to do with an app that is about birds being slingshotted (is that a word?) at pigs. I wish they had shown some more scenes with Red being angry instead of showing “flashbacks” as to why he was angry.  Or at least make those funnier. Heck, make any part of the movie funnier.

I can definitely understand why the movie only had a Rottentomatoes rating of 43% from the critics and a lowly 57% from the audience. I’m used to disagreeing with the professional critics (which is one of the reasons that I started this blog), but I guess I should have seen this coming when I saw the audience score. I try never to be swayed by those things though and make the decisions for myself.

All that being said, the final battle scene did have quite a bit of humor. That is when many of the talents of the birds come out (and those that have played the game know what I mean). Unfortunately, it was too little too late. Maybe if they do a sequel (ugh) they will have more material to work with now that they’ve established some of the things that the different birds can do. In any event, I would wait for the movie to come to Redbox, or better yet, wait for the sequel and hope it’s better!  There is a scene during the credits but none afterwards.

  1. I agree … I wanted to see more birds going postal and getting mad.

  2. Hopefully the next level up is funnier

  3. Me too! There’s no guarantee that there will be one, but if there is, I hope they take advantage of the discovery of their powers and make it funnier!
