Max Steel

This movie had so much potential, but sadly comes in at just 2 Icees out of 5. The movie is way too predictable.  For example, why does casting always hire an actor who always plays a bad guy to play… a bad guy?  As soon as you see this actor (trying to avoid spoilers here) you will know right away, yup… he’s probably a bad guy.

The only reason this movie even got 2 Icees is that the alien/robot/thingy had some really funny lines. Otherwise, it’s just a sad origin story for a franchise that won’t go anywhere. Now I get that origin stories aren’t always great, but others (like Ironman) have pulled it off so why can’t Mattel?  Oh wait, they’re a TOY company, not a movie company, and it showed. I kept waiting for the setup to be done so the real action could start, and that just never materialized.

Another thing that hurt this movie was the trailers. They made this movie look like an action movie, and it really isn’t.  At all.  Sci-Fi, sure… but action?  Nope. In fact, if you’ve seen the trailer, you’ve seen all the action that this movie has to offer. If you are a diehard Max Steel fan, do yourself a favor and don’t spend theater money to see this.  Wait for it to come out on Redbox and then waste a buck or two on a Thursday night. There’s no scenes during or after the credits.

I’m hoping that tonight’s movie (The Accountant) will be better.

Another entry into the “superhero” genre… or maybe it’s the “teen hero” genre… or perhaps the “movie from a toy” genre…  Okay, I’m not sure where it fits, if anywhere, but Max Steel, which comes out on October 14th seems like an interesting enough movie. Unfortunately for it, this is the same weekend as The Accountant and Kevin Hart’s movie so I don’t know how well it will do.  Since I’m not a Kevin Hart fan, I may see this, after The Accountant of course.
