Power Rangers

This fun movie gets a solid 4 Icees out of 5.  Now, before I go on I must confess this is right up my alley. I loved watching the ranger with my girls when I was younger and I was really looking forward to this and was hoping I wouldn’t be disappointed.  Although if you think about it, this movie was kind of put in a can’t-win situation. If it is too true to the old TV series it would be killed for being too cheesy. If it abandoned the series and went out on its own, then it would be slammed for not being true to the original.  I think this movie did a great job of balancing the two to come up with a great mix and a movie that’s just fun to watch!

Is it cheesy?  At times, absolutely. What do you expect?  This is the Power Rangers!  Is it true enough to be classified as a cheesy remake?  I really think so. It is true enough to the original to avoid that criticism, but at the same time it is its own movie.  Really, the cheesiest thing about this movie wasn’t the rangers themselves, but instead was Rita Repulsa (really? Rita Repulsa?) played by Elizabeth Banks. Her lines were often just way over the top… but again… I think that worked well for this movie. Brian Cranston did ok as Zordon and Alpha 5 was ok.

Where I think this movie really shines is the fact that it does a good job of setting a backstory for each of the rangers without it getting boring. I also commend the studio and director for going for and achieving diversity with the characters. There is white, black, asian, hispanic, male, female and even one struggling with identity. It’s a true melting pot of teenagers. By the way, none of the actors are actually teenagers. This is Hollywood after all, so I wouldn’t expect them to actually BE teenagers. Right?

If you go in to the theater looking for something that is action-packed from start to finish, you’ll be disappointed. I was surprised how much I enjoyed the pace of the film, even when they were covering the backstory.  I hope this movie does well enough to get a sequel (they plan for 5 of them) because now that the characters are set, I’d like to see them go into action right away!

There is a scene about mid-way during the credits but nothing afterwards.

Power Rangers Trailer

This new trailer shows more of the action that will be involved with this movie.  It looks like a sure-fire hit and I am hoping it is!  What do you think?

Power Rangers Trailer

This trailer contains some of the same scenes that were in the teaser-trailer, but a few more.  I’ll be honest, the more I see these trailers the more interested I am in this movie.  It looks like they really did a good job of setting things up.  Now I don’t now if it will have much action in it or not, but if they did it well, they could have set up quite a franchise, especially considering how popular Power Rangers have been, for many years.  Check it out and let me know what you think.  It comes out on March 24th.

Power Rangers Teaser Trailer

Okay, add this movie to one that I will have to see, and one that is guaranteed to draw a huge crowd (at least on opening night). Why do I say this?  Well, primarily because in the first 18 days on YouTube this trailer already has over 19 million (yes, million) views.  Is that because of the original series?  The various reboots?  I don’t know, but it actually does look pretty good. It comes out on March 24th and you can be sure that a review of it will be on this site!  After all, it is science fiction, looks fun, based on a kids show and looks like it could have some good special effects. In other words, it has The Don written all over it!  Check it out and let me know if you will be with me.
